Positioning North East Scotland as a global leader in energy excellence and pioneering technologies
The Hydrogen Campus comprises approximately 16 hectares of developable land and will support the significant low carbon hydrogen production growth opportunity across the region.
ETZ Ltd is developing the Hydrogen Campus within the Energy Transition Zone to build on Aberdeen’s decade of hydrogen experience and to further strengthen Aberdeen as a “centre of excellence for hydrogen”, with the aim of encouraging a cluster of companies specialising in hydrogen technologies to develop in the area.
Green Hydrogen Test & Demonstration Facilities
The key anchor project that ETZ will develop within the campus is the Green Hydrogen Test & Demonstration Facilities (GHTDF).
This will be a purpose-built, open-access, industrial test site that will support the emerging hydrogen sector to develop and demonstrate the performance of key technologies and components such as electrolysers, meters and valves by providing “on demand” hydrogen from the nearby bpAHEL AHH project.
The GHTDF project is currently undergoing Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and aims to achieve a Final Investment Decision by early 2026. Industry support is critical to achieving this important milestone and industry feedback on the design is currently being sought.
TÜV SÜD, the German multinational Testing, Inspection and Certification company, was selected to be the operator of the GHTDF. The facilities are expected to open in 2027, which will make GHTDF one of the foremost facilities globally for the advancement of technologies critical to the emerging hydrogen economy.
GHTDF will be built ‘organically’, in a phased approach, allowing our test facilities to grow over time. We believe this is necessary given that the hydrogen sector is still nascent, so we can accommodate new technology testing requirements as they are identified by industry. The first phase of GHTDF will deliver facilities to allow electrolyser performance testing and the development of a large-scale flow loop for testing and calibration of hydrogen meters and valves. We will also be able to accommodate integration testing of various components in key hydrogen production or end-use systems.
