Leading the UK's
Green Hydrogen
Ambition

Positioning North East Scotland as a global leader in energy excellence and pioneering technologies

A Region Building on Success

Aberdeen is internationally acknowledged as the “oil and gas capital of Europe”, a reputation built over fifty years of offshore engineering activity. Increasingly, Aberdeen is being recognised for pioneering the use of green hydrogen. The city already has a decade of hydrogen production experience, and is home to Europe’s most diverse range of hydrogen transport vehicles. Its ambition does not stop there. In 2024, bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited (bpAHEL), the joint venture between bp and Aberdeen City Council, made the Final Investment Decision to build the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub (AHH),  new scalable green hydrogen production, storage and distribution facilities which are currently being built within the geography of the Energy Transition Zone and will be operational by end 2026.

North East Scotland is also ideally placed to deliver a substantial proportion of the UK’s future low carbon hydrogen requirements, potentially up to 20% of the 2030 production target of 10 gigawatts (GW), as a result of new energy transition opportunities, in particular offshore wind, low carbon hydrogen production and Carbon Capture & Storage.

North East Scotland Hydrogen Ambition (NESH₂A) Steering Committee

The North East Scotland Hydrogen Ambition (NESH₂A) Steering Committee is a group made up of experienced executives from both private and public sector organisations based in North East Scotland who are actively working on hydrogen projects, and therefore have key insights into the region’s hydrogen economy potential.

A transport-specific action group has also been formed to build on the initial success of the hydrogen transport project in the region and to accelerate the next phase of transport-focused projects on the ground. The group is made up of experienced personnel from both public and private sector organisations active in the deployment of hydrogen transport in the region.

The NESH₂A Steering Committee was responsible for developing North East Scotland’s TH2ISTLE Hydrogen Valley bid for European funding, which has successfully made it through the EU Clean Hydrogen Partnership’s technical assessment process and is now in the grant preparation stage, with grant funding likely to be formalised by the end of 2025.
