Positioning North East Scotland as a global leader in energy excellence and pioneering technologies
Scotland is home to significant CO₂ storage potential and existing energy infrastructure which can be readily repurposed to decarbonise Scotland, the UK and Europe, creating sustainable jobs and developing new green industries.
The Acorn Transport & Storage Project
The Acorn Transport & Storage (T&S) project is a joint venture, benefiting from the collective expertise of Storegga, Shell UK, Harbour Energy and North Sea Midstream Partners. The UK government confirmed £200 million development funding for Acorn and Scottish Cluster partners to advance the project towards Final Investment Decision (FID) during the current UK Parliament – an important step for the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries in Scotland.
Acorn T&S is part of the Scottish Cluster, a collection of industrial, power and hydrogen businesses in the North East of Scotland and Central Belt who will capture their CO2 emissions and then transport them to be permanently stored into the Acorn geological stores, deep under the North Sea.
Of the UK’s potential 78 billion tonnes of storage, 75% is in Scottish waters in the central and northern North Sea. The Scottish Cluster aims to make the most of this potential by opening access to infrastructure for CO₂ reduction projects aligned to the country’s and Europe’s net zero goals.
The projects in the Scottish Cluster have the potential to abate up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂, per year, by 2030 – that is up to one-third of the UK Government’s total CO₂ emissions reduction target for that year.
